It's a shame that most folks don't know much of Randy Newman's songbook beyond "Short People," "You've Got a Friend in Me," and (sadly, most prominently) that time the red-headed lady reached for an apple. Mr. Newman writes a hell of a song.
I shared Bonnie Raitt's cover of this tune a ways back, but there's something jarring about Newman's simple delivery that has kept me looping this recording for years. His melody is presented so heartbreakingly matter-of-factly that you have to feel for the miserable slob weeping on his lost love's doorstep.
I can't help but think that most of us have been there.
